Long live the green house…formerly known as the pink house. We were away for the weekend and returned to a painted exterior. Good news all around!
Living Large!
Oh my! Lots Happening this Week
So, earlier this week, they plugged in the fridge and we thought that was exciting enough. Then, today, Ethan Allen delivered the furniture we ordered what seems like months ago. So, it’s safe to say we’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Lots to share:
Kitchen cupboard shells are installed. Appliances will be in place before the end of the week.
The laundry room cabinets are also in, and we have a working washer and dryer. No more laundromat for us!
The living areas are now filled nicely with furniture and we’re excited to have someplace to sit besides the camp chairs on the lower level. The furniture works really well with the wall colors and flooring. We’re so pleased with how things look and can’t wait to share with friends.
Everything looks out on the awesome view of Puget Sound. It’s nice to have a place to have a coffee outside, or in.
And then there’s our bedroom furniture that we think looks amazing. Tomorrow we hope to add a mattress to this bed:
What’s left? Appliances, countertops, and cabinets need to be finished; patio off the lower level poured and the exterior painted. Lights need to be installed as well.
Soon. We are seeing the light at the of the tunnel. It’s getting brighter too.
We are officially “those people”…
While work is not complete on the “pink house” we have officially become those people you see on HGTV. We have moved into the renovation, living in the lower level while the upstairs is completed. We have a bed and bathroom (although the sink is in another room) and feel as though it’s true progress. Plus, we don’t exactly have a mirror yet but Mary was a little industrious:
As for other progress there has been a ton. The slate stairway in place and, as of yesterday, was grouted. And the railing sure looks super!
Here’s a peak at the guest room shower (with Mary in the reflection). We’re looking forward to hosting friends who will enjoy it…after we’re done with it. And speaking of bathrooms, the next picture is of Mary’s soaker tub. You can’t beat that view!
They haven’t painted the outside yet, probably next weekend, but we have our official lock and the lights installed on the outside of the house. Oh, and a pretty cool Craftsman doorbell too.
Finally, last night we were enjoying the sunset from the deck and realized Mt. Rainier was reflected in the deck windows.
Things Keep On Keeping On
Progress continues on the pink house remodel as we get closer and closer to move in. Lots of littler finishing things happening. But late last week the deck furniture was delivered. We’re really excited to spend tons of time out there! The weather has been pretty amazing and we’re counting on it continuing.
The other big news is the carpet installation in the lower level. The rooms are basically done there with the exception of door knobs and hardware. Oh, and the bathroom which needs fixtures and a sink.
We are having fun seeing the colors and design come together. Mostly, though, we just are anxious to move in and get settled. Our “stuff” has been in storage since October but will be delivered June 22. Things will be a mess for a few days but then it’ll be home for sure. Todd the plumber assures us Dan the electrician will turn turn on the hot water tanks very soon.
Finally, here are some other pictures of the colors upstairs that we really love. From left…the single pink wall in the powder room with the green slate that’s also in the entry way; colors of our bedroom and bath; view from the living area through to the bedroom showing the greens and blues…and the covered hickory floors so they painters don’t splash on them.
Finishing is Getting Closer
We weren’t able to go in the house yesterday as the contractor said there were too many things going on and drying. So, tonight’s visit was pretty fun. The trim has been painted on the downstairs level and looks really rich. We forgot to take pictures though so you’ll have to take our word for it.
One of the reasons we couldn’t go in the house was they were finishing up the slate and now are beginning to install it on the stairs. We think it looks really good!
Upstairs, we have a railing on the deck…just in time for tomorrow’s delivery of deck furniture. Yes, Alaskan friends, we bought real deck furniture we’ll leave out and even use all year! We’ll post pictures of that tomorrow night. We’re really happy with the choice of deck railing, something we changed several times during the process. Just can’t wait to spend time out here, and hope to have lots of good conversations with friends there.
The crown moulding is in around the dining area ceiling and really makes the green accent pop. The moulding isn’t painted yet so we’re sure it’ll be even brighter once it is.
Moving to the master bathroom, we’re excited with the look of the tile work going on. The first picture is deck for the soaker tub. The blue mosaic glass tiles really sparkle in the light and look kind of like an ocean. Evidently that’s the look Mary was trying to achieve…In the shower we are using that tile for accents on the wall as well as the bench seat and ceiling. It’s going to be quite fun!
Loving How Things are Coming Together
This week has been a series of big updates that aren’t terribly photogenic. But we’ll share anyway because that’s why you’re here. The trim is in throughout the house and so are the doors. The slate and hardwood are nearly all installed and the permanent front door lock is in a box by the door.
The world headquarters of The Barber Group is looking very crisp, white, and a little empty! The office has a glass door and big window so Mary can see the view while she’s hard at work.
Lights are being installed, inside and out. Yes, that is a pink wall Mary choose for in the powder room. It’s only one wall and we think it’ll look really nice when the room is finished.
Work is continuing outside as they are connect the plumbing in the new addition to the sewer. Seems a bit important since it’s our bathroom and the brewery!
Back to more of the pretty things, tile is nearly done in the guest bathroom. It will look nice with the Marmoleum which was installed in the guest and master bathrooms.
It’s a little hard to see the colors in the master bath (blue) but we think it will look great…and blue…when it’s done. Next time we do pictures we’ll try to get better lighting.
An update on the burglary…we have had really good luck with the insurance company and expect to get a check this week. It sure does pay to have good insurance! And, remember how Home Depot sent us an email saying the thief returned the light so we got a credit? Not so fast. It seems the clerk gave the guy a gift card even though he didn’t have a receipt. But, she took a picture of his driver’s license so maybe that will be a tip the police need.
The bigger news is we’re moving out of the apartment this weekend and to a hotel for 10 days. On the 11th, we’ll begin “glamping” in the house. We’ll have deck furniture, and Michael (the contractor) is really trying to have the lower level finished. It will be nice to begin the move-in process. Furniture delivery is the week of June 22! That’s 25 days from today!
Today…Trim, Tile and more…
We went by the house today after a busy day and were thrilled with more action happening. There was so much we aren’t sure where to start. Trim is being installed on the outside, and inside.
Isn’t it cool with the reflection from the view? Did we mention doors? Interior trim?
And the Marmoleum arrived today for the laundry room and bathroom floors. The green was pulled back so we could see, and it’s beautiful. We are sure the blue for our bathroom will be too!
And then there’s tile…going into our shower (white) and in boxes for the guest bathroom (marmoleum goes on the floor in that room too).
It’s amazing how we can go from being so upset about the burglary to being excited again about the progress. Oh, and an update on the thieves…it appears they returned one of the lights they stole to Home Depot. Funny thing is since we bought it with a credit card, they couldn’t get cash for it. Instead, we got an email saying the credit was going on the card used for purchase. So, we found out which store and reported that to the police who are now asking for the surveillance camera footage. Busted…we hope!
Onward and Upward
Mary’s mom always said “onward and upward” whenever she met a challenge. It seems especially fitting this week. Thanks to all for your supportive messages following the weekend robbery. It certainly took us by surprise and has thrown the schedule (temporarily) into a less organized state.
We’re glad no one was hurt, and the house wasn’t trashed, and sorry that our contractors lost tools critical to their profession. We are all in the midst of creating lists and gathering receipts for the insurance companies and the police. We don’t, however, have a lot of hope we’ll get it back.
Meanwhile, the crews have been busy installing what wasn’t stolen. The hardwood floor is nearly complete as is the slate entryway. The master bath shower floor tile is already replaced and installed. Other items have been reordered and are on their way.
You can see by how quickly things are moving again that our team hasn’t lost a beat. So, here you go with the latest pictures:
Thanks again! It bears repeating this week: onward and upward.
We’ve been robbed…literally
So, yesterday we were going to post pictures of our hardwood floors and slate going in the house. We ran out of time but it’s really pretty.
Today is definitely the big downer of the entire build. During the night someone kicked in the front door and robbed us. They obviously knew what they were doing and what they wanted to take with them. Gone are the vast majority of our kitchen appliances, remaining slate and bulk of the tile for the master bathroom. We have a pretty good idea this was done by pros and not anyone working on the house.
Gone also are many of the contractor, and sub contractor’s tools that were in the house. Thankfully they didn’t do damage to the house itself and no one was there. It just puts our schedule a bit out of whack and is a real pain.
Now it’s on to dealing with insurance companies, trying to extend our apartment lease and postponing furniture, etc., deliveries. It had been going so smoothly…
